Ancient Olympia, also known as the “valley of the gods”, is one of the most famous and popular destinations. The birthplace of the Olympic
Games was one of the most important sanctuaries of the ancient Greek world, dedicated to Zeus Xenios, the king of the gods.

Located at the foot of Kronios hill, the archaeological site attracts millions of visitors from all over the world every year. It includes the Sanctuary of Zeus, and the temples and buildings directly associated to his worship, as well as various structures built around it; auxiliary, utilitarian and administrative buildings, and also structures of a secular nature. Altis, the sacred
grove, occupies the central part, while the imposing temple of Zeus and, further north, the older temple of Hera, dominate the sacred site.

East of Altis is the stadium where the Olympic Games were held. In the same area, there are complexes of bathhouses and mansions, such as the famous mansion built by Nero when he stayed in Olympia.

A short distance away is the Museum of Olympia, where one can admire outstanding ancient exhibits, the most important being Hermes of Praxiteles, one of the most famous ancient statues, Nike of Paionios, a sculpture of rare beauty, as well as the impressive decoration of the Temple of Zeus.

In the area, there are also the Museum of the History of the Olympic Games of Antiquity, which houses rare exhibits, as well as the Archimedes’ Museum, a thematic
museum dedicated to the great scientist. Archimedes’ inventions together with others of his time are exhibited in the museum, fascinating both young and old.
The small town of Ancient Olympia is displaying great growth, with hotels, restaurants, a market, excellent roads, and most importantly, wonderful scenery.
