Description

The Archimede’s (Kostas Kotsanas) Museum, located in Ancient Olympia, is a unique thematic museum of science and technology, dedicated to the greatest mathematician, physicist, engineer, astronomer and inventor of antiquity, who is recognized as one of the greatest mathematical geniuses of all times and one of the most brilliant scientists of classical antiquity.

The museum is housed in a two-storey main building and features inventions by the great inventor, which have been successfully reconstructed.

Characteristic exhibits are the Antikythera Mechanism, as well as 24 other inventions, from the time when the great Syracusan scientist lived and achieved great things. Some of them include the “cinema” and the “robot-servant” of Philon, the highly-precise automatic hydraulic clock, the “hydraylis”, and the twin suction force piston pump of Ktesibios, and the repeating catapult of Dionysius.

The exhibits are accompanied by rich audiovisual material, detailed drawings, images and complete bibliographical references.
Archimedes’ Museum, alongside the Museum of Ancient Greek Technology in Athens and the museum of the same name in Katakolon, form a complementary panorama of Archimedes’ legacy.

Access

Ancient Olympia can be reached by train from Katakolo and Pyrgos, by bus and by private vehicle. The museum is located in a central part of Ancient Olympia.
